The Unspoken Rules: The Secret to Starting Your Career Off Right

Succeeding in your career requires more than book smarts and technical skills. It takes mastery of the unspoken rules—specific ways of doing things that managers expect but don’t explain and that top performers do but don’t realize. Knowing these rules will set you up for success—and help you navigate professional dilemmas. The problem is, these rules aren’t taught in school. Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and former management consultant and career advisor, will share key insights and practical strategies that participants will be able to apply immediately to get further, faster in their careers. This event is open to current students and alumni.

Closing the Gap

On average, women must work through 2020 and into mid-April of 2021 to make the same amount of money men earned in 2019 alone. Statistically, women of color would have to work even longer: Black women until August, Indigenous women until September, and Latina women until November of the following year. Closing the Gap is designed to raise awareness about the gender wage divide and empower attendees of all genders to make a change. The event will begin with a panel discussion surrounding the gender wage gap, then panelists will facilitate deeper discussions in breakout rooms on salary negotiation tips, initiating crucial conversations and approaching systemic change.
